The holidays bring out the heathen in us—child and parent alike. Parents love, love, LOVE seeing those eyes light up with pure joy and happiness. For this, even the most civilized among us can turn into a venomous beast known as the Toy Fad Parent: a stampeding marauder rampaging through the toy aisles, grabbing, shoving, pushing, inching towards that verrry last Yo-Yo, Barbie, Dance Dance Revolution, Rock Band, Guitar Hero…
I fell for it once. I got taken down by a pink Tamagotchi. Tama-Got-Me all right. I wasn’t as bad as the parents during the Cabbage Patch Doll, Tickle Me Elmo or Furby Toy Craze Insanity Days, but I did drive from store to store and from town to town, within a good 50-mile radius, on my frantic search for the elusive pink Tamagotchi.
I was successful. I found one; and I did see the beautiful, little smiling face light up when it was opened…and it was played with…for one whole week. Then back to school she went and suddenly, I became the parent of a newborn pink Tamagotchi that I had to feed and play with like clockwork or it would DIE! DIE! Who makes toys like this?? Tama-Got-ME all right.
But here we are: another Christmas—and another toy craze: the Zhu Zhu Pets have come to town! I’m here to help you score one easily so you can enjoy your Christmas (or whichever holiday you are celebrating!) and not be reduced to troglodyte (caveman) status.
So, here’s the deal: on Saturday, November 21, 2009, Toys“R”Us will have 400 Zhu Zhu Pets™ available at each of 16 Toronto area stores listed below.
Also, on Saturday, November 21, 2009, another 1,100 more will be available online at www.toysrus.ca. These little hamsters will be selling for $12.99 each (batteries included) and quantities are limited to two hamsters per family, while supplies last.
The four artificially intelligent hamsters that will be available are:
Chunk (white) – the laid-back surf hamster who is famous for chillin’ out, hangin’ back and layin’ low.

Pipsqueak (yellow) – the petite powerhouse who loves to play, explore, run and slide.

Mr. Squiggles (brown) – the fussy and finicky hamster who’s been there, done that and lived to tell about it.

Num Nums (grey) – the dependable fuzzy friend who is full of laughs and love.
Each of the four Zhu Zhu Pets™ has its own unique personality and whimsical sounds - they squeak, chatter and scamper across the floor. They drive around in little cars, zip up ramps and spin down slides, run in their hamster wheels, and get into all sorts of crazy situations. Their artificial intelligence even allows them to know what room of their hamster habitat they are in. They make toilet-flushing or teeth-brushing sounds when they enter the bathroom and sleeping noises and alarm-clock sounds when they go into their bedroom.
A hamster-world full of accessories, such as slides, wheels, cars and balls, will be available at select Toys“R”Us stores across Canada in mid December.
Just remember: I got taken down by a pink Tamagotchi…
