Petcetera’s blowout sale is nearing its end.

In light of recent news, Petcetera has released a flyer advertising their inventory blowout sale. All merchandise is a minimum of 20% off, with savings up to 70%!

Before you get too excited, note that the discounts above will be applied to regular prices. So when you see their famous yellow tags advertising a “special” Petcetera Member’s price, with the regular price scaled down in size and crossed out - that price under that stroke is the actual price that the discount will be applied to. A while back Petcetera had a 50% off sale on Cat Trees, so I went to check it out. Not knowing that the discount would be applied to its regular price I took an item up to the till only to be shocked when it rang in above the “Member’s Price”, so you definitely have to be careful when sifting for a great deal at Petcetera. Still, might be worth a look. It surely has my curiousity up.

As a follow-up from yesterday’s post, one of our readers, Susan, has informed us about an article that was published in Kitchener-Waterloo’s newspaper:The Record. ”Petcetera Seeks Bankruptcy Protection” the headline reads as it goes on to say that consumers should expect a 70% discount for the next 2 months.

Petcetera, a nationwide pet store chain, is seeking protection from creditors under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act. In a news release, chief executive Dan Urbani said the recession has forced the company “to take drastic measures . . . to be viable in the long term.” The company is reviewing all of its operations, including its 49 stores, and offering 70 per cent price reductions for the next 60 days.

According to TopNews, in an effort to unload its merchandise and to generate cash flow, Petcetera’s two-month cross-Canada liquidation sale began on March 21st so you should start to see considerable discounts in-store from here on.

I must say, this is disappointing news. Back in December we announced how unfortunate it was to see Iams and Eukanuba products to be let go from their ”Buy 10 Bags, Get 1 Bag Free” Program and now one of our readers, Alice, has just informed us how the entire Petcetera program has since “vanished”.

Be aware of this: Petcetera is no longer honouring their “contract” with customers to provide a free bag of dog food after you buy ten. I went in yesterday and despite the signs still being there on the door and the very embarrassed nice young man who worked there, the program had “vanished.” I hope he gets his last paycheck paid in full. Petcetera is going down.

And it would appear it has. Petcetera now has the following notice on their website announcing that the “Buy 10 Bags, Get 1 Bag Free” program has been suspended:

Whether you can consider this good news or not but to reflect the absence of the program beginning this Friday, March 27th, all customers can save 20% on all bags of cat or dog food. Also note that Petcetera’s March Madness sale is still on until March 31st, 2009 which allows you to save an extra 15% throughout the store which may account for a total of a 35% discount til the end of March.

Unfortunately for some, ‘last chance’ also applies to Petcetera’s ‘Buy 10 Bags of Food, Get 1 Free’ offer.

If you haven’t already heard, effective January 1st, 2009, all Iams & Eukanuba products will no longer be participating in Petcetera’s “Buy 10 Bags, Get 1 Bag Free” program on all sizes of dry dog or cat food.

This means that if you’d like to claim your free bag of Iams or Eukanuba dog or cat food, you have until January 1st, 2009 to purchase your 10th bag to qualify and receive your final free pet food coupons.
