Personally, I believe you can save more in a smaller quantity on sale and by applying coupons to each item vs. one coupon on a multi-pack. Example: Save $2 on 5 x 10 count items (Save $10 with coupons on total of 50 items) vs. $2 off 1 x 50 count item (Save $2 on total of 50 items). As such, I didn’t stumble across any scorching deals for these stores this week.

Groceries for the week? $78. Cost of plastic bags? 40¢. Shopping with a reusable bag instead? ‘Priceless’?

Everything has its cost. The environmentally conscientious sacrifice their convenience and the rest of us in turn defeat the purpose of BYOB - Bring your own bag. 

Starting today, January 12th, 2009, all Loblaws owned stores will join Food Basics and No Frills as they charge 5¢ per plastic bag. To offset this charge, Loblaws stores plan to carry stronger, sturdier bags - or so they say. All proceeds will be donated to the World Wildlife Fund. So for those who haven’t heard and wouldn’t mind saving nickels as they shop, remember to BYOB.

The 5¢ fee per plastic bag will effect the following list of stores (Thanks Matt!):

• Loblaw Superstore

It would be interesting to find out if the sale of plastic bags has actually increased to meet the demands of a decrease in ‘free’ bags. I assume Glad is very glad how green we’ve become.
