Software Description

My Take:

If you do basic photo editing this is great free software. It takes and improves upon the basic Paint program that comes with Windows and makes it much more functional and just generally more useful. I’ve been using this software for some time and it is great to resize, crop and convert between different image types among many other features. Best of all it is very easy to use.

My Take:

Some good deals here and also another free play game. Remember you need to have the Steam client installed to access the free play or to play any game you purchase via Steam. All prices are in USD. The Lead & Gold pre-load isn’t currently showing, but will show up in your game library once it is setup.

If you are wondering about the Steam service itself, I’ve been using it since 2003 without issue. It’s a digital game content site that hosts hundreds of games for purchase, usually at a discount of those in store. The only drawback is you have to download the game and have the Steam client running while you play (you can play in offline mode after downloading and activating the game).

My Take:

Free weekends are great to try out a games full version before you buy the game. Even if you don’t end up buying the game, you still have the weekend to have some fun with it. Just make sure to preload (download) the game prior to the free weekend before the servers get overloaded with downloads as the weekend approaches.

Head on over to your local 7-Eleven on July 11th and grab your free 7.11 oz slurpee. This is actually a rather small sized drink, but it is completely free, so worth it if you are driving by or heading to one anyways.

Be sure to get yours earlier, as with the hot summer weather and this free promotion, the machines tend to get overworked and you may end up with something that more closely resembles pop than a slurpee.

My Take:

If you are a frequent Starbucks user and use the Internet on the go, then this is great news. It’s about time they offered up some free Wi-Fi like many other places currently do. The only drawback, is it might get a little more crowded as people hang around a little longer than before because of the free access. Although, prior it required a purchase to get 2-hours of access (which is plenty of time to be there), but I do wonder if anyone will drop by and not buy anything.

Virustotal is a free service that analyzes suspicious files and facilitates the quick detection of viruses, worms, trojans, and all kinds of malware detected by antivirus engines.

It utilizes over 40 different anti-virus engines (drawn from many of the major anti-virus vendors).

It’s a great website to use to double check a file you downloaded or email attachment that you are suspicious of. You simply upload the file or attachment to the website and it will run a virus scan for you. You can also email attachments to them for checking at scan@virustotal.com. The file cannot exceed 20 MB however.

Another cool thing, is that you can use URLs (web addresses) and verify a file before you actually download it. As an alternative to using their website directly, you can download their program which adds an option to the windows explorer context menu, so you can choose to scan files from within Windows with a simple click.
